A movie like Year One is a movie that you really don't know if it will be good or not when you see the trailers. So when I saw this I didn't know what to expect. I had some high hopes because the movie has a huge cast of comedians and comedic actors and the director, Harold Ramis, has directed many comedic movies so I had hoped he would make this movie good. What I got, though, is a movie that really did not entertain me like I thought it would. Year One is about Zed (Black), a would-be hunter, and Oh (Cera), a shy gatherer, who both go on a journey to find something else in the world after Zed eats from the tree of good and evil and is banished from the tribe. Soon, their tribe is enslaved and they go to rescue the women they love. Along the way, they are thrown into various bible stories such as Cain and Abel and Abraham and Isaac. As I said, this movie did not entertain me that much. It was a very flat comedy with some jokes being repeated throughout the movie. Although Jack Black and Michael Cera are the main characters, most of my laughs did not come from them. Most of my laughs came from the side characters such as David Cross as Cain. David Cross is a very funny actor and comedian who always delivers his lines in such a way that you can not help but to laugh at him. Another thing I disliked about this film was the dialogue. While expected the dialogue between Jack Black and Michael Cera to be very dry and boring, the film had way too much of it. There are scenes where they both start talking to each other about something and then they just go off into a rant about something else entirely. Also, as always, Michael Cera talks how he always does during the film where you can barely even tell what he is saying. All in all, the film is not something you need to rush out and see but because I got a few good laughs I would say you could rent it and you would have some fun watching it.
